Arlington,Texas – U.S. Men’s National Team forward Haji Wright will miss the remainder of the Concacaf Gold Cup because of an achilles injury, U.S.Soccer announced Saturday. The injury impacts Wright’s role on the team.
Wright, 27, will return to Coventry City for evaluation and treatment, according to the USSF. Tournament rules prevent the team from replacing him on the roster. His role as a forward will need to be filled by another player.

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed reporters, saying, “Always sad to see a player leave… he’s a very good guy,and adds very good quality to the group,[a] different option.” He added, “He’s a player that can play in different positions in the attack. Yes, sad situation, sad for him, sad for the team, but I think we need to prioritize his process to recovery.”
Wright scored as a substitute in the USMNT’s 5-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago. Though, he missed training before the saudi Arabia match and was not on the game-day roster. The team must now adjust its strategy and player roles.
Pochettino said an announcement on Wright’s status would come soon after the Saudi Arabia match. A team spokesperson noted Wright participated in gym work only during Saturday’s training session.
