Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary Update Breaks Steam Player Records

Half-Life 2’s 20th Anniversary Update Breaks Steam Player Records

November 18, 2024 Catherine Williams Tech

Valve released an update for Half-Life 2 to mark its 20th anniversary. This update has led to a new record for concurrent players on Steam, reaching 64,222. The surge in players occurred over the weekend after Valve improved the game and released a documentary showing gameplay from the canceled Episode 3. Additionally, Half-Life 2 was available for free until November 18.

Half-Life 2 first launched on November 16, 2004, shortly after Steam’s introduction. Although player count records began in September 2008, we know that the game had its highest popularity now, surpassing the previous peak of 16,101 players in August 2021.

The anniversary update includes the complete Episode One and Episode Two expansions, which players can access from the main menu. After finishing each episode, players progress automatically to the next one.

The update also features new developer commentary, with Valve recording three and a half hours of behind-the-scenes insights. Another significant addition is Steam Workshop support, enabling players to find, install, and play user-generated content directly from within the game.
