Zverev Battles Illness to Win; Medvedev Advances at Halle Open

Alexander Zverev, the world’s No. 3-ranked tennis player,powered through a mid-match illness to defeat Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-4,7-6 (8-6) at the Halle Open. Zverev’s quarterfinal victory at the grass-court tournament was briefly in doubt when he requested a toilet break in the second game and left the court to vomit.
Despite looking unwell upon his return and initially struggling in longer rallies, Zverev, 28, managed to hold off Cobolli, ranked No.24. His role in the tournament continues as he advances.
“I felt fine before the match,” Zverev said. “Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt really, really bad. I felt ill, went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt OK again.” He added, “I don’t know what it was, I’ve never experienced that before. I hope I’ll be fine in the next couple of hours when the adrenaline settles.”
Zverev is slated to face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals. Medvedev’s Friday match also saw a brief delay when he suffered a nosebleed on the court. Despite needing a medical timeout in the second set, Medvedev, 29, a former world number one, secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Alex Michelsen. His role in the tournament remains strong as he keeps his Wimbledon preparations on track with just 10 days remaining before the Grand Slam event.
medvedev noted the challenges presented by the court conditions. “The shadows on the court made the conditions quite difficult,” he said. ”It took some time to get used to it.”
