Zverev Battles Illness to Win; Medvedev Advances at Halle ‍Open

Alexander Zverev, the world’s No. ⁣3-ranked⁢ tennis player,powered through a mid-match⁢ illness to⁢ defeat ​Italy’s‍ Flavio Cobolli 6-4,7-6 (8-6) at the Halle Open. Zverev’s ‍quarterfinal victory at ⁣the ‌grass-court tournament‌ was briefly in⁤ doubt when he requested a toilet break‌ in the second ‌game and left the ​court to vomit.

Despite looking ‍unwell upon his return and initially struggling in longer rallies, Zverev, 28, managed to ⁣hold ⁢off ‌Cobolli, ranked No.24. ⁤His role in the tournament continues ‌as he advances.

“I felt fine before the match,” Zverev⁣ said. “Then ⁤all⁤ of a sudden, out of⁤ nowhere,⁢ I felt really, ‌really bad. I felt ill, went ‍to throw up and ‍then 15⁣ minutes later I felt OK again.” He added, “I don’t know what it was, I’ve never experienced that before. I hope I’ll be fine⁤ in the next couple of hours⁣ when the adrenaline settles.”

Zverev⁢ is slated​ to ⁢face Daniil Medvedev in the‍ semi-finals. Medvedev’s Friday match‍ also saw a brief delay when he suffered a nosebleed on the court. Despite needing a medical timeout⁤ in the second⁢ set, Medvedev, ‌29, a former⁤ world number one, secured a ‌6-4, 6-3​ victory over American Alex Michelsen. His role‌ in the tournament‌ remains strong as he keeps his Wimbledon preparations on track⁤ with just 10 days remaining before the Grand Slam event.

medvedev noted the challenges presented by the ⁤court conditions. “The shadows⁤ on the court made the conditions quite difficult,”⁢ he ‌said. ​”It took⁣ some⁣ time​ to get used to it.”
