The development of Halo: Campaign Evolved was marked by technical setbacks and management failures that led to the cancellation of a separate multiplayer Halo project, according to reporting from industry insider Rebs Gaming. The project faced significant hurdles during its transition to Unreal Engine 5, resulting in a rushed final year of production and the removal of planned real-time cutscenes.
Unreal Engine 5 Integration and Asset Rebuilds
Halo Studios transitioned the remake to Unreal Engine 5, a move intended to simplify development but which instead created substantial technical friction. The original game relied on an older engine known as Blam, and leadership reportedly informed the team that assets could be ported directly into the new engine. According to Rebs Gaming, this proved inaccurate, and 100% of the assets had to be rebuilt from scratch.
To manage this complexity, Halo Studios recruited a studio called Abstraction around 2023. Abstraction’s role was to modify the original work to ensure compatibility with Unreal Engine 5 and integrate new features such as four-player co-op and sprinting. Because the original levels and combat encounters were not designed for these mechanics, the integration process was technically demanding.
The Departure of Abstraction
Rebs Gaming reports that Abstraction was removed from the project prematurely. This departure allegedly stemmed from unrealistic deadlines and expectations imposed by Halo Studios on a technically complex project. While individual staff members from Abstraction received special thanks, the studio itself was not included in the game’s credits.
A source told Rebs Gaming that the work completed by Abstraction was discarded and redone quickly. This rapid overhaul is believed to be the cause of various AI problems and bugs present in the final release.
Canceled Multiplayer Project and Development Crunch
The mismanagement of the remake’s production had ripple effects across other Halo developments. Rebs Gaming alleges that a separate multiplayer Halo project was canceled because the Campaign Evolved team required its staff and resources to meet deadlines.
The final year of development was characterized by crunch as the team struggled to deliver the game on time. These pressures also impacted the game’s cinematic presentation. The team originally planned for real-time cutscenes that would have displayed the player’s custom weapons and armor. These were scrapped after the external team responsible for cinematics struggled to finish the work in time for the release.
Current Reception and Halo 2 Remake
Despite the reported internal turmoil, Halo: Campaign Evolved has been received fairly well by players, though some have noted issues that suggest the experience was incomplete. Official sales data has not yet been released but is expected within a few weeks.
The game concludes with a tease for a Halo 2 remake, suggesting that Halo Studios intends to continue the process of updating the series’ early titles.
