Updated May 31, 2025
Hamas has responded to the U.S.-led proposal for a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, stating it seeks amendments to the agreement. While Israeli officials have approved the proposal, details of Hamas’ response remain unclear.
The militant group said its response aims for a permanent ceasefire, complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid. The proposed agreement includes the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and the remains of 18 others in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
A senior hamas official, speaking anonymously, said the group has “some notes and amendments to some points, especially on the U.S. guarantees, the timing of hostage release, the delivery of aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.”
The U.S.envoy to the Middle East’s office stated on social media that it received Hamas’ response, deeming it “totally unacceptable and only takes us backward.” The envoy urged Hamas to accept the original framework proposal as a basis for talks to secure a 60-day ceasefire deal, which would see half of the living hostages and half of the deceased returned to their families.
A draft of the deal indicated Israel would release 125 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,111 Palestinian detainees, along with the remains of 180 deceased Palestinians. Humanitarian aid would be sent into Gaza promptly upon Hamas’ agreement.
Meanwhile, the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) reported that 77 aid trucks, mostly carrying flour, were stopped and looted by hungry Palestinians before reaching their destinations. the incident underscores the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where a near-total blockade has pushed the population to the brink of famine.
