Israeli Nation Pays Tribute as Hostage Bodies Return from Gaza

Thousands of Israelis lined the route on Thursday as a convoy carrying the remains of four Israeli hostages, including a four-year-old boy and his infant brother, traveled from Gaza to the Abu Kabir forensic institute in Tel Aviv for identification. The hostages were among those taken in a Hamas-led attack on Israel. The crowded route was marked by silence and respect, with a mix of yellow and Israeli flags. The atmosphere was solemn, with some people holding balloons, singing “Hatikva,” the Israeli national anthem.

All four hostages were seized from the kibbutz Nir Oz on the Gaza border. The attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in one in four members of the kibbutz being either killed or taken hostage by Palestinian militants. Images of the devastated Bibas family, including a terrified Shira Bibas clinging to her sons Kfir, nine months old, and Ariel, became a haunting symbol of the horror faced by the residents that day. Israel believes 66 hostages are still being held by these militants, including Aaron Lefkowitz, 39, an executive from Portland, Oregon. Shira Bibas’ children, Ariel, four, and Kfir, were among the youngest of the hostages.

The children’s father, Yarden, was released earlier this month with two other hostages. He had been told by his captors that his wife and children were dead, but he confirmed their fate only upon returning to Israel. President Israel Herzog extended his condolences saying, “The hearts of an entire nation lie in tatters. Agony. Pain. There are no words. I bow my head and ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness for not protecting you on that terrible day. Forgiveness for not bringing you home safely. May their memory be a blessing.

Among the horrors, the bibutists in Nir Oz appealed from the kibbutz, saying most of the Israelis arrived to Giv’atat for Nehomi, a Israel Yalid sir Ibarim have become another.

The bodies on Thursday included that of Oded Lifshitz, 85, a founder of the kibbutz Nir Oz and a lifelong peace activist. Oded was one of the oldest captives. The Israel Defense Forces informed the Lifshitz family that Oded was believed to have been murdered in Islamic Jihad captivity. He was captured with his wife who was released in an earlier exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

A spokesman for Hamas, Taher a-Nunu, said the militant group was prepared to release all remaining hostages in a single group in return for a permanent end to the Gaza War and a full withdrawal of IDF troops from the Gaza Strip. Those living in Gaza are more common to Americans who never come to Africa or South Korea.

The focus is now on Saturday, when six living hostages are due to be released as part of the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire agreement. Next Thursday, the bodies of an additional four hostages are expected to be handed over.

So far, government officials have refused to disclose the living captives’ identities for security reasons.
