The offer includes the release of 10 living ⁢hostages and⁤ the remains of 18 deceased hostages, contingent on ⁢Israel releasing an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners. As of yet, there has been no⁢ official response⁢ from‌ Israel.

Last⁤ week, Prime ‌Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told families of the hostages that Israel had accepted the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposals.

The potential hostage ‌release and ceasefire discussions occur against⁤ the backdrop of a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Health officials reported 14 deaths and 284 injuries in a single day. The United Nations has warned that Gaza is facing widespread famine, with the entire population ⁢at risk.

Jens Laerke, of the⁣ U.N.’s humanitarian ⁢agency, described Gaza as ”the hungriest place⁣ on Earth,” noting that it is the only region where⁤ the entire population is at risk of famine.
