The offer includes the release of 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 deceased hostages, contingent on Israel releasing an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners. As of yet, there has been no official response from Israel.
Last week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told families of the hostages that Israel had accepted the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposals.
The potential hostage release and ceasefire discussions occur against the backdrop of a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Health officials reported 14 deaths and 284 injuries in a single day. The United Nations has warned that Gaza is facing widespread famine, with the entire population at risk.
Jens Laerke, of the U.N.’s humanitarian agency, described Gaza as ”the hungriest place on Earth,” noting that it is the only region where the entire population is at risk of famine.
