Hamas Hostages Released to Israel – Trump Declares Gaza War Over

October 13, 2025 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Hostage Release Offers Glimmer of Hope Amidst⁢ Ongoing Conflict

REIM, Israel/GAZA CITY – A fragile hope emerged ⁣on October 13th as ⁣the first group of hostages held by⁢ hamas began their return to Israel, marking a⁣ pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict. The releases are part of a ceasefire agreement brokered by ‍the‌ US,‍ Egypt, Qatar, and ⁢Turkey, and concluded last week in Sharm el-Sheikh.

“ItS hard‌ to imagine how I feel this moment. I didn’t sleep all night,” ⁢said Ms. Viki ⁣Cohen, mother of hostage Nimrod Cohen, as she travelled to reim, an⁤ Israeli military camp where the‌ hostages will be transferred. Near the⁣ camp,Israelis lined the roads waving flags adorned with yellow ribbons – symbols of ⁢remembrance for the hostages – interwoven with the blue ‌Star of David.

in Gaza, preparations for the handover were underway at‌ Nasser Hospital, where a stage and chairs had been set up to welcome returning Palestinian prisoners. Approximately 1,966 detainees ‍were‌ transported by bus, with most ‌expected to be released at⁣ the hospital. “I hope⁢ that these images can⁣ be the end to this war. We lost friends and relatives; we lost our houses and our city,” said Mr. ⁤Emad Abu Joudat, 57, a Palestinian father of six from Gaza City, watching the ‍preparations unfold on his phone.

The US-mediated agreement includes a plan for a future “Board⁤ of Peace” led by former President Donald Trump. Trump‌ arrived in Israel shortly after the initial hostage release,⁢ receiving a hero’s⁤ welcome from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who greeted him at the airport and accompanied him by limousine as‍ a band played.⁢ He is scheduled to address the Knesset, becoming only the fourth US president to ⁣do so, and will be awarded Israel’s highest civilian honor later in 2025.

However, significant challenges remain. further steps in⁣ Trump’s 20-point plan, including ⁣the governance of the devastated Gaza⁢ Strip and the fate of Hamas - which has refused Israel’s⁤ demand to disarm – are yet to be agreed upon. The appearance of masked Hamas gunmen at Nasser ⁤Hospital underscored concerns about the group’s continued influence in Gaza, which⁣ it has⁣ controlled sence ⁤2007.

Other sticking points ‍include Israel’s potential further withdrawal ‌from Gaza and the possibility of creating a Palestinian state, a prospect opposed by ⁢many Israelis.

The conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023,‌ which killed around 1,200 peopel in ‍Israel and led to the capture of 251 hostages, has had a devastating impact. Israeli air strikes and ground assaults have resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths,⁣ according to Gaza’s health officials. two years of⁤ war have left Gaza in ruins, displacing nearly all of its 2.2 million⁢ residents and ⁣creating a massive⁤ humanitarian‍ crisis. The conflict has also broadened⁢ regional tensions, involving spillover conflicts with Iran,⁤ Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and Yemen’s Houthis.

Hamas‍ affirmed its commitment to the terms of the deal on October 13th, contingent on Israel’s adherence, claiming Israel agreed to a ceasefire ⁤and swap after failing to⁢ secure the hostages’ release through military means. UN aid chief Tom ⁢Fletcher reported that Israel had approved the delivery of more emergency supplies, and UNRWA urged Israel to allow unhindered aid access to Gaza.

Israeli critics ⁤of Netanyahu, including families of the hostages, accuse him of prolonging the war⁢ to maintain the support of his far-right ⁢coalition partners. The International criminal Court issued arrest warrants⁣ for Netanyahu in 2024⁤ for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, charges ⁣Israel‌ denies.
