Hamas Leaders in the Crosshairs: US Unleashes Historic Criminal Charges Over Devastating October 7 Attack
US Files Charges Against Hamas Leaders for Deadly October 7 Attack
The US has filed charges against several Hamas leaders for their alleged role in planning, supporting, and carrying out the deadly October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people, including over 40 American citizens.
Among the main defendants is Yahya Sinwar, the current head of Hamas, who is believed to be hiding in Gaza. Khaled Meshaal, who heads the group’s expatriate office in Doha, and Ali Baraka, a senior Hamas official in Lebanon, were also charged.
US prosecutors also included charges against several Hamas leaders who were recently declared dead, including former leader Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed Deif, the head of the <a href="https://www.newsdirectory3.com/australia-to-add-hamas-to-terror-list-australia-to-list-hamas-as-terrorist/” title=”Australia to add Hamas to terror list Australia to list Hamas as terrorist”>military wing, and Marwan Issa, deputy military chief.
Attorney General Garland emphasized that these leaders “led Hamas’ efforts to destroy the state of Israel and killed civilians in support of that goal.”
The charges were originally filed in February but were kept “under seal” in hopes of catching Haniyeh. The decision to release them now could have significant implications for political and diplomatic dynamics.
The announcement comes in the context of a conflict that has escalated dramatically. In response to the October 7 attack, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of over 40,800 Palestinians and massive destruction of the territory.
