Hamas has indicated a willingness to release American-Israeli soldier Edan alexander, along with the ‌bodies of four deceased hostages⁣ holding dual citizenship, ‌signaling a potential shift amid ongoing ceasefire talks.

The extremist group stated thay have received “a proposal” from mediators, ‌though specifics‍ remain ‍undisclosed.⁣ Qatar and Egypt have been key players in mediating ⁢indirect discussions between Israel‍ and Hamas.

Details ⁣of the Proposed Release

According to ⁤Hamas, their response to the mediators included “its ⁣approval to release the Zionist soldier Edan Alexander, who ⁢has ‍American citizenship, in addition to the⁣ bodies of four other people with dual nationality.” The names of ‌the deceased hostages‍ were not provided.

The United States reportedly presented a new ⁣proposal aimed at securing the release ‌of a number of living ⁤hostages‌ held by Hamas in exchange for a month-long extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

This proposal, presented in Qatar by special⁢ envoy Steve Witkoff, also includes the potential for israel to lift the blockade⁤ on humanitarian aid to⁣ Gaza, which has been ⁣in place for nearly two weeks.

Direct Negotiations and Diplomatic ⁤Efforts

The announcement follows reports that the United States is engaging in direct negotiations with Hamas regarding the ceasefire⁣ agreement, a departure from its conventional⁣ stance of not engaging with groups it considers terrorist organizations.

Prior to this, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff visited Doha, Qatar, to ⁢meet with Arab officials, and Israel sent ⁣a delegation⁢ to Doha for discussions.

Stance of Israeli Officials

In a statement, the office of Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated ⁣that “while ‌Israel has accepted the Witkoff outline, Hamas is standing firm in its refusal and has not moved one iota.”

The statement continued, “Simultaneously occurring, it continues to engage in manipulation and psychological⁤ warfare.” The Prime Minister is scheduled ‌to meet‌ with his team to discuss “a detailed report from the negotiating team, and ‌to decide on the next steps for the release of the ⁣hostages.”

Israel claims that Hamas rejected a previous proposal by witkoff to⁢ extend the ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan and Passover without a commitment from Israel for a permanent ceasefire.

Hamas’s Commitment ⁣to a Final Agreement

A senior Hamas⁣ official⁢ told CNN that the group remains ⁣committed to the initial agreement with Israel that could end the war ‍in Gaza.‌ The official noted that the group⁢ exceptionally ‌accepted ⁢a proposal ⁤from mediators to release Alexander and the bodies of four deceased hostages with dual nationality.

Hamas‌ had previously indicated its willingness to release Alexander ⁤as part of negotiations ⁢to end the war, according to Taher al Nunu, a senior⁢ official from Hamas, as reported by Al Aqsa‌ TV. Al Nunu stated that Hamas conveyed ‌this ‌message to⁢ U.S. officials during recent talks.

The Hostages

alexander is‌ believed to be the only living American hostage in ⁤Gaza. Hamas ⁢also holds the remains of four other deceased Americans: Judi Weinstein Haggai and her husband gad Haggai, and‌ soldiers Itay Chan ‍and Omer ⁢Maxim‌ Neutra.

It is believed that at least 12 American-Israelis were captured during the extremist group’s attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.

three⁤ months ago,⁢ Hamas released a propaganda video of Alexander, showing the Israeli-American hostage pleading with Netanyahu and then-U.S. President Donald Trump not to forget him⁣ and to do everything possible‌ to release the remaining hostages in⁤ Gaza. Netanyahu’s office described it⁣ as “the publication of the brutal psychological ⁣warfare video in which an notable and emotional sign of life was received from Edan.”

Alexander’s father, Adi, mentioned ⁢they had seen the video and that Alexander was “holding⁤ on.”

“He is there,⁢ and he is alive, and he is ‌just waiting ‍patiently,” Adi said, adding that the family knows “he is not⁢ in a grate condition.”

“He lost a lot of weight, maybe he suffered some injuries on October 7,‌ because he was brutally attacked by more than 20 extremists,” he said, describing his son as “a ⁣totally ‍American guy.”

Criticism and Concerns

The Hostages and Missing Families ⁢Forum in Israel criticized prioritizing the release of ⁢captives based on nationality, calling for‌ the release of all hostages regardless of their passports.

“The return of ‌the hostages should only be the opening to an agreement that returns ‍everyone ‌in one step and immediately,” the‍ forum stated, adding that or else, it constitutes an “abandonment” that “is based on ‌a foreign passport.”

“If Israel insists on stopping halfway and leaving its citizens⁤ behind, every Jewish mother will no that ⁢she must issue a foreign⁢ passport to her son, or they will be abandoned,” the forum added.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Simultaneously⁢ occurring, the fate of over two million Palestinians in Gaza hangs in the balance. Israel has cut⁤ off the electricity supply to the last facility in Gaza still receiving⁤ power from the Israel Electric Corporation⁢ (IEC) and closed its main crossings with ⁤the enclave to aid.

The UN World Food Program (WFP) stated that since March 2, ‌the agency‍ has been unable to transport any food supplies into Gaza due to the⁢ closure of all border crossings for⁣ both humanitarian and commercial supplies, adding that⁢ the WFP has the equivalent of “two to three months ‌of distributions for 1.1 million people, awaiting authorization to enter‍ Gaza.”
