starvation Levels Unprecedented, World Food Program Director States
The United Nations has issued a stark warning this week, declaring that humanitarian access to Gaza “remains severely restricted.” The severity of the situation is underscored by the World Food Programme (WFP) director of emergencies, who described the level of starvation as “unlike anything we have seen in this century.” Despite these dire pronouncements, the UN noted that Israel is now permitting “humanitarian pauses,” allowing over 100 aid trucks to enter Gaza on Sunday.
Controversial Aid Site Visited by US Envoy
Amidst this escalating crisis,Witkoff, alongside the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, visited an aid site in Gaza on Friday. This site is operated by the controversial Israel and U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The visit comes as the United Nations reports a tragic toll: over 1,373 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food since the end of May. Alarmingly, 859 of these fatalities occurred at GHF-run sites.
IDF Responds to Civilian Casualty Reports
In response to these reports of civilian casualties near distribution sites, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the incidents are currently under review. The IDF clarified its role in a statement to TIME, explaining, “The IDF allows the American civilian institution (GHF) to operate independently in distributing aid to the residents of Gaza, and operates in proximity to the new distribution areas in order to enable the orderly delivery of food.”
The statement continued,”IDF forces are conducting systematic review processes in order to improve the operational response in the area and minimize,as much as possible, any friction between the civilian population and IDF forces.”
