Hamas Seeks Gaza Ceasefire as Hezbollah Enters Lebanon Truce with Israel

Hamas Seeks Gaza Ceasefire as Hezbollah Enters Lebanon Truce with Israel

November 27, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Hamas Signals Readiness for Ceasefire Amid Hezbollah Ceasefire

Hamas announced its readiness for a truce in Gaza as Hezbollah seems to have halted its military actions following a ceasefire with Israel. A senior Hamas official stated that they have communicated with mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey about their willingness to reach a ceasefire and negotiate a prisoner exchange. The official accused Israel of blocking any potential agreement.

Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel on October 8, 2023, after a deadly assault by Hamas that resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and about 251 hostages taken. Initially, Hezbollah claimed it would not cease its operations until a ceasefire was established in Gaza.

Iran, a supporter of both groups, welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon but did not connect it to the situation in Gaza. Israel claimed that ending the Lebanon ceasefire helped separate the two conflicts.

Despite Hezbollah’s separate agreement, a Hamas official downplayed its significance. Sami Abu Zuhri expressed hope that this agreement could lead to a resolution for Gaza. He held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for past failures to reach a ceasefire, asserting that Hamas has shown a willingness to negotiate.

Recent attempts at negotiation have seen little progress, and Qatar has suspended its mediation until both parties are ready to make concessions. Reports suggest that Hamas may be open to a deal that does not require a complete end to the conflict, a demand that had previously hindered talks. However, some Israeli officials dispute this claim.

Inside Gaza, residents are anxiously watching for signs of peace. Some expressed cautious hope, while others fear increased hostilities as Israel turns its focus back to Gaza. Many displaced Palestinians lament the lack of attention to their plight while enduring harsh winter conditions in makeshift shelters.

The Hamas-run health ministry reports over 44,000 casualties in Gaza from the ongoing conflict, although the numbers cannot be independently verified. Israel claims to have eliminated around 18,000 Hamas fighters while aiming to reduce civilian casualties.

As Israel affirmed that it would intensify military pressure on Hamas, Netanyahu stated that Hezbollah’s inaction left Hamas isolated. He highlighted Israel’s military successes and reiterated their commitment to retrieving hostages still held by Hamas.

Tensions continue in Israel as far-right ministers threaten to derail any potential hostage deal that could involve releasing Palestinian prisoners. These political dynamics complicate the situation further, as families of hostages express frustration over the government’s focus on settlements rather than their loved ones’ safe return.

The ongoing conflict remains a pressing issue, with voices from both sides calling for resolution and peace amid a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
