Hamburg Grapples with Continued Public Transport Strikes

Hamburg commuters faced another day of significant disruption on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as strikes impacting the city’s public transport network continued. The industrial action, led by the Verdi labor union, has brought U-Bahn services to a complete standstill and severely impacted bus routes.

The current wave of strikes began on Tuesday, February 17th and is scheduled to last until 3:00 AM on Thursday, February 19th. The action follows a similar 24-hour strike earlier in February, highlighting ongoing tensions between Verdi and public transport operators over wage negotiations.

According to Hochbahn, Hamburg’s public transport operator, all U-Bahn traffic is cancelled throughout Wednesday. Lines U1, U2, U3, and U4 are all affected, leaving passengers with no subway service. Numerous bus lines are also suspended, including routes 13, 40, 42, 140, 141, 143, 145, 146, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 156, 157, 241, 245, 250, 251, 254, 340, 345, 349, 350, 351, 354, 355, 443, 450, 451, 543, 640, 641, X40, and X46.

The disruption extends beyond Hochbahn services. Buses operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH), particularly in the east of Hamburg and the Schleswig-Holstein districts of Lauenburg and Stormarn, are also experiencing significant restrictions.

Verdi is demanding a 7.5% wage increase and a €200 rent subsidy for apprentices as part of ongoing tariff negotiations with public transportation operators across Germany. The strikes are not limited to Hamburg, with similar action planned or already underway in several Bavarian cities, including Augsburg, Regensburg, Passau, and Landshut.

In Bavaria, Augsburg will be affected by strikes on Thursday, while Regensburg will experience two days of public transport shutdowns, Thursday and Friday. Passau and Landshut are scheduled for strikes on Friday. In all these Bavarian cities, buses and trains will remain in depots, effectively halting all public transit services during the strike period.

While the strikes primarily target local transport associations, it’s important to note that S-Bahn services and regional trains operated by Deutsche Bahn are not impacted. However, commuters are strongly advised to check for updates and plan alternative routes, as the widespread disruption is causing significant challenges for those relying on public transportation.

The strikes come amid a broader wave of industrial action across Germany, with Autobahn employees also participating in a “Streikwoche” (strike week). This coordinated action underscores Verdi’s firm stance in labor demands and the growing conflict between unions and public transportation operators nationwide.

Commuters in Hamburg are advised to monitor the Hochbahn website and the HVV app, as well as the Hamburg city website, for the latest information on service disruptions. The HVV strike is expected to conclude at 3:00 AM on Thursday, though a slight delay in resuming normal service is possible.
