updated June 16, 2025
Lewis Hamilton’s Canadian Grand Prix took an unexpected turn when he made contact with a groundhog. Despite the incident, Hamilton managed to finish sixth, tho he felt a podium finish was unlikely even without the collision.
Hamilton cited issues during his pit stop and subsequent traffic as contributing factors to his less-than-ideal result. He also noted the team needs upgrades to compete at the front of the grid. The formula 1 driver believes that without these challenges, a fourth-place finish might have been possible.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur humorously addressed a similar incident involving a marmot and the Ferrari car. He said the encounter damaged the front of the floor, resulting in a downforce loss. Vasseur quipped that the team would “send flowers to the marmot.”
Vasseur also responded to Hamilton’s call for upgrades, stating that Ferrari plans to introduce an upgrade package before the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. He added that another upgrade might follow later. Vasseur emphasized the importance of maximizing the car’s potential through execution.
“We stayed out problably too long in the first stop and came out behind traffic and just went from one thing to another. So, I’m grateful that I could just finish notably with the brake issue I had to bag those points.”

“First, it’s true that we had a small kiss with the marmot. It was lap eight or nine at the beginning of the first stint. And we damaged all the front part of the floor. It’s something like 20 points [of downforce]. Hopefully, we didn’t have a big change in balance, but it was a lot of performance. We will send flowers to the marmot.”
