Hamilton Police Confirm 14-Year-Old Surrenders in Connection with Fatal Shooting of 16-Year-Old at Jackson Square Mall

Hamilton police have confirmed that a 14-year-old male suspect has surrendered in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jackson Square mall on Friday, April 24, 2026.

The teenager turned himself in to authorities on Sunday evening, following a judicial authorization obtained by police the previous day to identify him in relation to the incident. His surrender came after an extensive search that began Friday night when officers responded to reports of gunfire at the mall located on King Street West.

Upon arrival, police found the 16-year-old victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Nabil Askafe, a 16-year-old resident of Hamilton who had recently moved to Canada from Syria with his family.

Investigators have confirmed that the suspect is being held in connection with second-degree murder in relation to Askafe’s death. Police stated that the youth can no longer be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Following the surrender, Hamilton police announced that they have spoken to all individuals involved in the altercation at Jackson Square mall and are not seeking any additional suspects in connection with the incident.

Hamilton police Chief Frank Bergen described the shooting as “deeply troubling,” particularly given that a young person is suspected of responsibility. He emphasized the broader impact on the community, stating, “Our community continues to grieve the loss of a 16-year-old whose life was cut short in an act of senseless violence. The fact that another young person is alleged to be responsible is deeply troubling.”

Bergen called the incident a “community call to action,” urging residents to reflect on the circumstances that lead youth toward violence instead of resolution, and hope. He stressed that addressing such violence requires collective concern and effort beyond law enforcement alone.

The victim’s family, who immigrated from Syria, have been described as “completely devastated” by the loss. Police noted that Askafe is survived by his mother, father, and a younger brother, all of whom are receiving support during this time.

As of Sunday night, no further suspects are being sought in the case. The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to process evidence and coordinate with relevant agencies regarding next steps in the legal proceedings against the detained youth.
