Hamilton Public Health has ordered the temporary closure of a Stoney Creek restaurant following a salmonella outbreak that has resulted in nine confirmed infections and seven hospitalizations.

The investigation centers on the Piper Arms Stoney Creek location, situated at 1786 Stone Church Road East. Public health officials announced the closure on April 13, 2026, to ensure the facility is safe before operations resume.

Outbreak Details and Patient Impact

The outbreak has caused significant health complications for several diners. According to Hamilton Public Health, nine cases of salmonella have been linked to the establishment, with seven of those individuals requiring hospital care.

Impacted diners reported developing symptoms between March 30 and April 5, 2026. These symptoms included chills, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

One specific account describes a couple who visited the restaurant for wing night on March 31. Both individuals, aged 50, became severely ill two days later.

The couple required treatment at two different facilities. One was admitted to Juravinski Hospital with kidney issues, while the other was treated at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton for myocarditis, a heart condition, and a salmonella blood infection.

Public Health Investigation and Response

Hamilton Public Health conducted inspections of the premises on April 10 and April 13, 2026. Following these inspections, the restaurant was ordered to close on April 13.

Public Health Investigation and Response

Health officials are currently working with the restaurant operator to review sanitation and food handling practices. As part of the ongoing investigation, food samples have been collected for laboratory testing.

Despite the closure, public health officials stated that no specific problems requiring corrective action have been identified as of the current reporting. The closure serves as a precautionary measure to determine if operations are safe to resume.

The specific food item responsible for the outbreak has not yet been confirmed.

Understanding Salmonella

Salmonella is a common cause of foodborne illness. It is typically found in unpasteurized products and raw or undercooked foods, including meat, eggs, and poultry.

Public health officials provide the following guidance for those who may have dined at the restaurant:

  • Individuals experiencing severe or worsening symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention.
  • Those with mild symptoms are advised to stay home until they recover and maintain regular hand washing.
  • Individuals without symptoms should monitor their health and practice good hand hygiene.

The investigation remains ongoing as health officials work to identify the source of the infection and ensure the safety of the food service environment.
