Hannah Einbinder, the Emmy-winning star of the series Hacks, appeared at the Kering Women in Motion Talks during the Cannes Film Festival to discuss her latest film project and her stance on political activism within the entertainment industry.
During the session, which featured an interview with Variety’s Angelique Jackson, Einbinder addressed the world premiere of Jane Schoenbrun’s queer slasher, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the upcoming conclusion of her work on Hacks, and the importance of maintaining political advocacy despite industry pressures.
A Queer Vision of Horror
The film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, opened the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night. The premiere was met with a six-minute standing ovation from the audience.
In the production, Einbinder portrays Kris, a rising indie filmmaker. The character is tasked with revitalizing a cult classic horror franchise known as Camp Miasma. Einbinder stars alongside Gillian Anderson, who plays one of the original scream queens from the fictional franchise.
As the characters in the film develop a relationship, the narrative delves into complex themes regarding sexuality, gender, and desire. Einbinder noted that the role allowed her to examine personal connections to the film’s central themes of bodily discomfort and sexual shame.
I really related to Kris’ difficulty being comfortable in her body. The film largely reckons with a thing that probably most people have experienced in this room, which is shame and discomfort around sex. And definitely in doing this film I had to examine just how true that was for me. And I think it’s something that we do not talk about — that’s why I think this film is so important.
