Hannah Gutierrez, the armorer on the Alec Baldwin film “Rust,” was released from a New Mexico women’s prison Friday after serving 14 months. Her conviction stemmed from the October 2021 accidental shooting death of cinematographer halyna Hutchins.
Gutierrez was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a Santa Fe trial last year. Prosecutors argued she recklessly handled firearms and ammunition, potentially bringing live rounds to the Bonanza Creek ranch set and mixing them with dummy bullets. Gutierrez denied the allegations, and the origin of the live rounds remains unconfirmed.

Baldwin, who pointed the gun that discharged, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the charge was later dropped after evidence concealment by prosecutors. assistant director david Halls pleaded no contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received a suspended sentence.
Gutierrez received the maximum sentence for her role and was released on parole. She is also under probation for unlawfully carrying a gun into a Santa Fe bar before the shooting. Her parole terms include mental health assessments and a firearms ban.
Gutierrez declined an interview request thru her attorney.
“When I took on ‘Rust,’ I was young and I was naive but I took my job as seriously as I knew how to,” Gutierrez told the judge during her April 2024 sentencing hearing.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who presided over the case, stated that Gutierrez “alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon.”
