Passenger evacuations from the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius have landed in Eindhoven, Netherlands, as health authorities update the number of hantavirus infections linked to the vessel. According to reports from Le Monde, seven patients have been diagnosed as positive for the virus, while another individual is considered a probable case.

The outbreak was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 2, 2026, following a cluster of passengers presenting with severe respiratory illness. The vessel was carrying 147 passengers and crew members at the time. The WHO reported on May 4, 2026, that the onset of illness occurred between April 6 and April 28, 2026.

The clinical progression of the illness was characterized by fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, which rapidly progressed to pneumonia, shock, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. As of May 4, 2026, the WHO identified three deaths and one critically ill patient, along with three individuals who reported mild symptoms.

Laboratory confirmation of the virus occurred on May 2, 2026, through testing conducted in South Africa on a critically ill patient in intensive care. An additional death was reported on May 3, 2026.

Evacuations and Vessel Status

Following the identification of the cluster, medical evacuations were organized for passengers. La Liberté reported that an evacuation flight transporting passengers from the MV Hondius landed in Eindhoven. Orange Actualités further noted that the MV Hondius is now sailing toward the Netherlands following the completion of these evacuations.

The outbreak has triggered international contact tracing and monitoring. BFMTV reported that approximately 20 contact cases have been identified within French territory.

Transmission and Risk Assessment

Human hantavirus infection is primarily acquired through contact with the saliva, feces, or urine of infected rodents. However, the WHO noted that limited human-to-human transmission has been reported in previous outbreaks of the Andes virus, a specific species of hantavirus.

The possibility of how the virus spread aboard the ship remains under investigation. Libération reported that, at this stage, health officials cannot exclude the possibility of contamination occurring without close contact between individuals.

Despite the severity of the individual cases, the WHO currently assesses the risk to the global population from this event as low. The organization continues to monitor the epidemiological situation and update its risk assessments as further laboratory investigations and in-depth inquiries proceed.

The international response to the outbreak has involved coordinated efforts including case isolation, medical evacuation, and laboratory testing to determine the extent of the spread among the passengers and crew.
