Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special: A New Contender in the Adventure Motorcycle Market
After a successful launch in 2021, Harley-Davidson’s Pan America 1250 and 1250 Special models have garnered praise within the adventure motorcycle community. The American manufacturer has entered a competitive segment traditionally dominated by European brands, aiming to establish itself as a serious player in the adventure touring world.
At the heart of the Pan America is the Revolution® Max 1250 engine, a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-Twin designed for both flexible performance and high-RPM power. The engine produces 150 horsepower and 94 ft. Lbs of torque, reaching its peak torque at 6,750 rpm, thanks to variable valve timing. Harley-Davidson engineers optimized the engine’s design for lightweight construction, integrating it as a structural component of the motorcycle’s chassis – serving as a front, mid, and tail section mounting point.
The 2022 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 starts at $17,319 in the US, while the Pan America 1250 Special begins at $19,999. Canadian pricing reflects $21,599 for the base model and $24,999 for the Special edition.
Both the Pan America 1250 and the 1250 Special are equipped with a suite of technologies designed to enhance control and safety. These include Cornering Enhanced Electronically Linked Braking (C-ELB), Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS), Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS), Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System (C-DSCS), Hill Hold Control (HHC), and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
Riders can choose from five pre-programmed ride modes: Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road, and Off-Road Plus. The Pan America 1250 Special offers two additional customizable ride modes, allowing owners to tailor the motorcycle’s performance characteristics to their specific preferences. Each ride mode adjusts power delivery, engine braking, C-ABS, and C-TCS settings.
The Pan America 1250 Special, as tested by RoadRUNNER magazine in 2022, featured electronically adjustable semi-active suspension elements from Showa with 7.5 inches of travel front and rear. The test bike was also equipped with aluminum panniers, a Screamin’ Eagle silencer, cross-spoke wheels, engine and radiator guards, and a quickshifter. With these accessories, the price reached approximately $24,000, comparable to similarly equipped competitors like the BMW R 1250 GS and Ducati Multistrada V4.
Harley-Davidson addressed rider feedback from the initial 2021 release with upgrades for the 2023 model. These improvements include a new deflector designed to redirect hot air from the radiator away from the rider, and a more stable support for the windshield.
As of February 7, 2026, used 2022 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special models are available for sale. Bayside Harley-Davidson lists a model with 14,366 miles for $9,998, while Standard Cape Fear Moto Group offers a model for $13,999 (originally priced at $16,999). The HD-1 Marketplace also features pre-owned Pan America 1250 Special motorcycles, allowing buyers to shop by year, mileage, price, and color.
The Pan America 1250 Special represents Harley-Davidson’s commitment to expanding its reach beyond traditional motorcycle segments. By leveraging its engineering expertise and a powerful new engine platform, the company aims to capture a share of the growing adventure motorcycle market.
