Harriet Spencer Shines as Max in CTC’s ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’
Harriet Spencer Stars in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at CTC
Harriet Spencer, a junior at Como Park Senior High School, plays Max, the Grinch’s dog, in the Children’s Theatre Company’s (CTC) production of “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” This show runs until January 5.
Spencer’s theater journey began in first grade with “Three Little Pigs.” She has also performed in “Alice in Wonderland” and “Corduroy” at CTC. She describes the role of Max as physically demanding but rewarding.
“The art pulled me in,” Spencer said. She believes her character, Max, embodies innocence and a desire to do the right thing.
Director Dean Holt selected Spencer for her brave and curious spirit. He appreciates how her performance highlights Max’s humanity.
Despite long rehearsals, Spencer finds joy in the experience. She feels grateful to be part of CTC. “Every time I walk into CTC I think, ‘How did this happen?’” she said.
This is CTC’s 12th year producing the Grinch musical, originally debuted in 1994. Holt mentioned that this year’s adaptation features new music and set pieces while engaging the audience.
Children’s theater plays a vital role in nurturing young artists. Holt states it provides a safe space for kids and families to explore emotions and creativity.
Spencer hopes the musical will offer an escape for the audience. “Coming into the theater, you should expect a ton of fun,” she said, encouraging viewers to embrace the emotional journey of the show.
