A recent trend on tiktok has seen some users questioning the historical existence of Harriet tubman, a famed abolitionist. These claims,circulating on the popular social media platform,allege that Tubman was not a real person and that the Underground Railroad was a fabrication.
The trend reportedly began with a now-deleted video from a TikTok user who claimed tubman’s real name was Araminta Ross and that she served as a U.S. government spy. This sparked a wave of similar videos questioning the reality of both Tubman and the Underground railroad, with some users suggesting Tubman was involved in trafficking enslaved people, not freeing them. The spread of this misinformation coincides with concerns about anti-DEI efforts and the erasure of Black history.

Walt Way, a genealogist and historian, shared newspaper clippings and letters referencing Tubman to support her existence and contributions to the Underground Railroad.
“To keep it a bean with y’all, the fact that we have to defend Harriet Tubman’s existence in 2025…not onyl do we have access to letters she wrote, but also letters between other abolitionists that mentioned her,” Way said.
