The trend reportedly began with a now-deleted video from a TikTok user who claimed tubman’s real name was Araminta Ross and that she served as a U.S. government spy. This sparked a wave of similar videos questioning the reality of both Tubman and the Underground railroad, with some users suggesting Tubman was involved in trafficking enslaved people, not freeing them. While Harriet tubman was indeed born Araminta Ross in 1822, Maryland state government records confirm her existence. She adopted the name Harriet Tubman after marrying John Tubman, a free man, and dedicated her life to helping others escape slavery via the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she served as a cook and nurse for the Union Army, later becoming an armed scout.
