Updated June 27, 2025
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Padraig Harrington and Mark Hensby ended the first round of the U.S. Senior Open tied for the lead at 3-under par. Harrington’s resilience and Hensby’s early brilliance defined the day at the Broadmoor.
Harrington, the 2022 U.S. Senior champion, overcame a wayward tee shot on the par-4 15th hole to salvage a bogey and maintain his position. He had four birdies on the front nine. Hensby,in contrast, blazed through his first nine holes with seven birdies before stumbling with back-to-back bogeys to finish at 67.

Stewart Cink is among a group of six golfers sitting one stroke behind the leaders. cink bogeyed the 18th after hitting the first 17 greens in regulation.
Hensby expressed frustration with his back nine performance. The greens, influenced by the nearby Cheyenne Mountain, proved challenging for many players.
Notah Begay, who gained entry to the tournament as an alternate, noted the difficulty of the greens, comparing them to a less severe version of Oakmont. Begay shot even par.
Despite recent thunderstorms, conditions were relatively calm, allowing 17 players to finish under par. David Toms won the U.S. Senior Open when it was last held at the Broadmoor in 2018 with a score of 3-under.
“disappointed with my bogey on 15,” Harrington said. “I thought my tee shot was okay. I think we looked in the wrong place, to be honest. I think I was much further down, considering where my third ball went. That was a little disappointing. Nice to make 5.”
“Obviously, I felt like I lost some out there,” Hensby said. “It’s just frustrating. I played like s— the back nine. What else can you say?”
