Harris’ Darkest Hour: A Week of Turmoil Since Passing the Torch
Vice President Kamala Harris’s Presidential Campaign Faces Challenges
Speculation is rising that the “honeymoon” period between voters and Vice President Kamala Harris, the new Democratic presidential candidate, is over.
According to Newsweek, an American current affairs magazine, Vice President Harris has had the worst week since President Joe Biden resigned from the presidential candidacy.
The magazine pointed out that Vice President Harris, who has enjoyed a ”wave of support” since President Biden resigned on July 21, has faced several issues that could threaten the campaign in the past week.
Most notable is Vice President Harris’s poll approval rating, whose upward trend has slowed somewhat. According to a survey by the public polling agency Activot, Vice President Harris, who was ahead of former President Donald Trump’s Republican candidate by 5% points at the end of last month, was still ahead of the former President Trump in a public opinion poll released on the 2nd, but the gap increased to 2% points.
Although Vice President Harris is ahead in national opinion polls, there are those who point out that the race is in the battleground states, which are crucial for securing the Electoral College that will determine the outcome of the presidential election, still close or that former President Trump is partially ahead.
Nate Silver, an American statistician and famous political analyst, raised the probability of the victory of former President Trump to 60.1% in a presidential election prediction model based on the latest opinion polls, up 4.3% from the 55.8% and suggested four days ago.
On the other hand, Vice President Harris’s chance of winning the presidential election dropped from 44% to 39.7%.
Silver said, “National polls aren’t bad for Vice President Harris, but there’s almost a 20% chance that the margin of safety and the electoral college vote will be different (in the actual presidential election).”
However, confusion remains as experts have different predictions, with 538, another election analysis agency, predicting a 57% chance of Vice President Harris winning the presidential election in its prediction model, and a 42% chance to former President Trump.
A number of domestic and international issues that arose during the first week of September also form the background for the assessment that Vice President Harris had the ‘worst week’.
On the 1st, Vice President Harris and President Biden began to come under attack when the bodies of six hostages taken by Hamas in October last year were found in Rafah, southern Gaza, the Palestinian autonomous region.
Among these hostages killed by the Palestinian armed faction Hamas was an American.
Accusations have been made that the Biden-Harris administration, which prevented Israeli forces from conducting large-scale military operations in Rafah, is responsible for their deaths.
Last March, Israel announced that it would conduct a military operation in Rafah, where a large number of refugees from Gaza are concentrated, to eliminate Hamas, but President Biden blocked large-scale military operations in Rafah, saying that is a ‘red line’.
Some Republican politicians have raised the theory that Vice President Harris was responsible for the failure of the Israeli army to rescue the hostages, saying that the hostages were found dead in Rafah, where President Biden and Vice President Harris blocked the entry of the Israeli army.
The controversy surrounding former President Trump’s political activities in the national cemetery also had the effect of drawing attention to the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, which is considered one of the diplomatic disasters of the Biden administration.
Vice President Harris criticized former President Trump for violating cemetery rules by taking photos and filming videos while visiting Arlington National Cemetery with some of the bereaved families of victims of the Kabul airport attack last month.
Then, some of the bereaved families of terrorist victims who visited the shrine with former President Trump issued a statement criticizing President Biden and Vice President Harris, who decided to withdraw US troops, saying their being responsible for the sacrifice of the 13 US soldiers who were dead in the terrorist attack at the time.
Experts predicted an all-out fierce battle, saying that the spotlight on Vice President Harris has now gone with the baton of the presidential race, and that the busy presidential race has begun in earnest.
