Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has been voted Germany’s player of the year for 2026, while Vincent Kompany secured the coach’s accolade following an outstanding season for the Bavarian powerhouse, according to Kicker magazine.
According to Kicker magazine, the yearly poll organized by the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS) involved 659 members who cast their ballots for the top performers in German football. Kane gathered 272 votes to finish ahead of his Bayern teammate Michael Olise, who received 203 votes. Stuttgart forward Deniz Undav finished with 61 votes, followed by Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich with 21 votes and Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann with 14 votes, alongside three invalid votes.
Kane’s Goalscoring Season and Trophies
The England forward earned the honor after scoring 61 goals across all competitions last season, including the German Supercup, according to reporting by the Associated Press. That prolific run helped Bayern defend its Bundesliga title and secure the German Cup, highlighted by a hat trick Kane scored in the cup final.
Kane also helped Bayern claim the new season’s German Supercup with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund, though he did not find the back of the net during that specific fixture. The player of the year accolade has been awarded since 1960. Franz Beckenbauer leads the player category with four victories, while Florian Wirtz claimed the player’s award last year.
Kompany and Gwinn Receive Top Honors
In the managerial category, Vincent Kompany received nearly half of the total votes to claim the coach’s award, outdistancing Freiburg’s Julian Schuster, who won the accolade last year, as reported by the Associated Press. The coaching honor has been presented since 2002, with Jürgen Klopp and Felix Magath both winning the coach’s award three times.
According to the Associated Press, Bayern’s Giulia Gwinn secured the women’s player of the year award for 2026, avoiding a repeat of the previous year when she shared the honor with Germany teammate Ann-Katrin Berger. Gwinn received 106 votes to edge out Bayern teammate Klara Bühl and Jule Brand of OL Lyonnes. Gwinn and Bühl helped Bayern’s women’s team to a Bundesliga and German Cup double for the second year in a row, marking the club’s fourth straight league title and fifth in six years.
