Britain’s Prince Harry made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Thursday, April 23, 2026, calling on the United States to honor its international treaty obligations to Ukraine.

Upon arriving at Kyiv’s main railway station, Prince Harry said it was “good to be back in Ukraine” as the country marked its fifth year of war with Russia.

The Duke of Sussex addressed the Kyiv Security Forum, emphasizing that the United States has a “singular role” in supporting Ukraine due to its involvement in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, under which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances from the US, UK, and Russia.

“This is a moment for American leadership. A moment for America to show that it can honor its international treaty obligations,” Prince Harry stated during his remarks.

He added that US support should not be seen as charity but as part of America’s enduring role in global security and strategic stability.

Prince Harry clarified that he was not speaking as a politician but “as a soldier who understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the human cost of conflict, and as a friend of Ukraine who believes the world must not grow used to this war or numb to its consequences.”

During his visit, he also visited a memorial dedicated to fallen soldiers, where he became emotional, and urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict, stating there is “still a moment, now, to stop this war.”

The Prince noted that after years of war with immense losses and limited gains, the current path offers no victor—only more loss—and stressed that no nation benefits from the continued loss of life being witnessed.

This visit marks Prince Harry’s return to Ukraine, where he has previously traveled to show support for the country amid the ongoing war with Russia.
