The Hartford Whalers’ final playoff appearance came in 1986, when they pushed the Montreal Canadiens to a seven-game series in the Adams Division Finals before losing in overtime of Game 7.

That series, which concluded on April 29, 1986, marked the last time the franchise qualified for the postseason while based in Hartford. The Whalers would not return to the playoffs after relocating to Carolina in 1997.

In Game 7 of the 1986 Adams Division Finals, the Whalers and Canadiens were tied 1-1 after regulation, leading to overtime. Montreal won the game 2-1, securing the series victory 4-3.

Despite the loss, Hartford’s performance was notable: they had finished the regular season with a 40-36-4 record (.525 points percentage), scoring 332 goals (fifth in the league) while allowing 302 (tenth). Montreal, by contrast, finished 40-33-7 (.544), with 330 goals for and 280 against (fourth-best in the league).

Key contributors for Hartford included Kevin Dineen, who led the team in playoff scoring with 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists), and Ray Ferraro, who added 3 goals and 3 assists. Goaltender Mike Liut played in all seven games, posting a 2-2 record with a goals-against average that kept the Whalers competitive throughout the series.

The Whalers’ 1986 playoff run remains a defining moment in the franchise’s history, symbolizing both their competitiveness and the end of an era in Hartford before the team’s eventual relocation.
