Bangladesh Court Orders Hasina Return for War Crimes Trial
Updated June 16, 2025
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has directed fugitive ex-leader Sheikh Hasina, 77, to return from exile and face trial for alleged crimes against humanity. Hasina fled to India by helicopter in August 2024 amid student-led protests and has so far refused to comply with an extradition order.
The United Nations estimates that up to 1,400 individuals died during a government crackdown in July and August 2024, as Hasina’s administration attempted to maintain power. Hasina and other former officials connected to her now-banned Awami League party are being prosecuted by the ICT.
