Hasselt, Belgium – Downtown hasselt is getting a colorful makeover as 25 local artists transform empty storefronts and galleries into a captivating art exhibition. Running from January 5th to April 6th, “Art Takes Over Hasselt” showcases the work of nine Hasselt-based artists alongside 16 others from the Limburg region.
“We’re always looking for ways to bring people into our city center and keep it lively, even after the shops close,” said Rik Dehollogne, Hasselt’s alderman for Tourism and local Economy. “This exhibition is a fantastic way to do just that, while also celebrating the amazing talent we have right here in our community.”
The exhibition will feature a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums, promising something for everyone. Visitors can explore paintings, sculptures, photography, and more, all displayed in unexpected and engaging settings.
“We hope this exhibition will spark conversations, inspire creativity, and bring a new energy to our downtown,” Dehollogne added.
A City Transformed
The project aims to not only showcase local talent but also revitalize the city center by attracting visitors and encouraging them to explore the area after dark.
Two friends, Lena and Sander, are catching up at a cafe in Hasselt.
lena: “Have you heard about the new art exhibition taking over downtown?”
Sander: “Really? What kind of exhibition?”
Lena: “It’s called ‘Art Takes Over Hasselt,’ and it’s pretty unique. local artists are transforming empty storefronts and galleries into these amazing art installations.”
Sander: “Wow, that sounds interesting! How many artists are involved?”
Lena: “They have nine artists who are based right here in Hasselt, and another 16 from the wider Limburg region.So, it’s really showcasing the talent in our area.”

City Center Transformed: Art Exhibition Lights Up Downtown After Dark
Downtown is about to get a vibrant makeover. Starting January 5th,a unique art exhibition will transform the city center into an open-air gallery,showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions.
“There’s a good mix,apparently,” said Lena,a local resident excited about the upcoming event. “Paintings, sculptures, photography… even some interactive installations. I saw online that they’re even using some of the storefront windows as canvases!”
The exhibition, running until April 6th, aims to breathe new life into the downtown area, attracting visitors both during the day and after dark.
“They imagine people coming after dark to experience the art in a whole new light,” Lena explained. “They’ve really gone all out to make it a special event.”
More than just an art display, the initiative seeks to revitalize the city center and foster a sense of community.
“The alderman said they want to bring more people into the city center, even after the shops close,” Lena shared. “They’re hoping it will revitalize the area and spark some creativity in the community.”
Sander, another resident, was excited about the project. “That makes sense. It’s a great way to support local artists and businesses. I’m definitely going to check it out.”
