Haunted Denver Mansion Reports Paranormal Activity and Resident Ghosts

The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion, a historic Victorian estate located at 1128 Grant Street in Denver, is currently available for lease. Known as one of the city’s most haunted locations, the property is noted for reports of paranormal activity, including flickering chandeliers and books flying off shelves.

Built in 1889 during Denver’s Gilded Age, the mansion serves as a prominent example of the era’s architecture. The estate was originally constructed for Dr. Whitehead, a wartime surgeon who served during the Russian-Crimean War and the American Civil War.

A History of Residents and Hauntings

Paranormal claims associated with the mansion began shortly after its construction. Dr. Whitehead reportedly suffered from recurring nightmares regarding his time as a surgeon on the battlefields. This proves said that apparitions of men in military uniforms, believed to be soldiers who died under his care, have been seen lurking around the property.

The Whitehead family reportedly experienced physical disturbances within the home, such as picture frames falling and glasses breaking in the middle of the night. Dr. Whitehead died in the mansion in 1902, and his spirit is rumored to remain on the premises.

In 1903, James H. Peabody moved into the residence. Peabody’s tenure as governor was characterized by violence, broken union strikes, and voter fraud. Due to the deaths resulting from his policies and actions, it is suggested that he brought disgruntled spirits into the home during his two-year residency, which ended in 1905.

The Lady in Black

One of the most frequently reported spirits is the Lady in Black, a woman dressed in Victorian mourning attire. She is most often sighted on the second floor, gliding through the hallways.

Historians identify this figure as Margaret Peabody, who lost her young son to illness in 1891. Records indicate that Margaret wore mourning clothes for the remainder of her life due to her grief. Witnesses describe the apparition as translucent but detailed, noting the intricate beadwork on her dress.

Evolution of the Estate

Following the departure of Governor Peabody in 1905, the mansion underwent several transitions in use. It served as a rental property and later as a boarding house throughout the early and mid-20th century.

In later years, the building was converted into various commercial spaces, including bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. During the middle of the century, the location became a popular venue for jazz musicians to showcase their music.

Some paranormal publications claim the mansion is the most haunted building in Colorado. Reports suggest that at least twelve different spirits from various time periods and backgrounds reside at the 1128 Grant Street address, including phantom servants who continue to tend to their duties.
