Rebecca Wait’s Havoc isn’t just another boarding school story; it’s a brilliantly executed blend of comedy, suspense, and genuine psychological insight. Mining the rich tradition of girls’ school fiction, Wait delivers a novel that’s both deliriously entertaining and surprisingly unsettling, echoing the spirit of classics like St Trinian’s while forging its own distinct path.

A New Term, A New Mystery

St Anne’s, a school clinging to respectability despite its underwhelming reputation, is ripe for disruption. The arrival of Matthew Langfield, the institution’s first and only male teacher – a former Westminster schoolmaster no less – sends ripples through the student body and the staffroom. Geography teacher Eleanor Alston, navigating a personal crisis as she approaches forty, observes the unfolding drama with a weary, knowing eye. She becomes a crucial narrative guide as the school descends into chaos.

Wait expertly portrays the complex social dynamics of teenage girls. The students, largely sent to St Anne’s by parents seeking a quiet life rather than academic excellence, are a volatile mix of cliques, gossip, and burgeoning rebellion. Diane Fulbrook, the ambitious head girl with aspirations of joining the police force, reigns supreme, while the enigmatic Louise Adler – the school’s sole Jewish student and a figure shrouded in whispers – is promptly marked as an outsider. Louise’s reputation precedes her, fueled by rumors of arson and assault, and Ida, a new student, finds herself unexpectedly assigned as her roommate.

From Hysteria to Havoc: A Plot Thickens

The initial unease quickly escalates when Diane falls ill with a mysterious neurological disorder. As more students develop similar symptoms,a wave of panic grips St Anne’s. Diagnoses range from the outlandish – demonic possession and Soviet poisoning – to the more plausible, yet equally terrifying, mass hysteria. Suspicion naturally falls on the newcomers, Langfield and Ida, but Wait skillfully avoids easy answers, layering the narrative with ambiguity and red herrings.

The novel’s strength lies in its ability to balance lighthearted comedy with a growing sense of dread. There are clear nods to the Ealing comedies, especially in the farcical chases through school corridors and the behind-the-scenes machinations during the school play. However, beneath the surface levity, a distinctly unsettling atmosphere simmers. The girls’ terror feels convincingly visceral, edging the story into Shirley Jackson territory and lending a chilling authenticity to their escalating hysteria.

A genre Reimagined

Havoc isn’t simply a pastiche of girls’ school stories; it’s a clever reimagining of the genre. Wait’s characterisation is refreshingly unexpected, and the dialog is consistently sharp and witty. The plot is meticulously crafted, dense with detail and brimming with twists. Crucially, she dares to introduce a darker thread into the narrative, elevating the story beyond mere entertainment.

This boldness, combined with excellent pacing and a genuine originality, makes Havoc a thoroughly satisfying read. It’s a novel that will appeal to fans of classic boarding school tales, and also those seeking a more contemporary and psychologically nuanced thriller. Rebecca wait has delivered a captivating and memorable contribution to a happily capacious genre.
