Hawaii Faces Avian Flu Outbreak

Hawaii has reported its first case of avian flu. The Wahiawa Feed Store, which usually sells up to one hundred chicks, has stopped sales due to this outbreak.

Impact on Wildlife and Pets

Susie’s Duck Sanctuary is affected. The founder states that twenty rescued ducks, geese, and a swan died from the virus. Additionally, 13 wild zebra doves also perished. After confirmation of the disease, the Department of Agriculture euthanized at least 70 other birds from the sanctuary.

Nathan Kamahele from Pro-Act Products reported that the flu rapidly spreads among birds, leading to quick deaths. He recommends netting to protect chicken coops from wild birds.

Precautionary Measures

The Mililani Mauka Veterinary Clinic is alerting pet owners about possible exposure at a recent pet fair where some sanctuary birds were exhibited. Dr. Jamie Furutani advises anyone who attended the fair to monitor for respiratory issues in pets and themselves. If pets show symptoms like lethargy or coughing, owners should consult a veterinarian.

Community Response

The community is grieving the loss of around 100 birds. Fern, a muscovy duck with a prosthetic leg, was euthanized amid the outbreak.
