Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, United Kingdom, and became a renowned theoretical physicist and cosmologist.
Hawking studied Physics at the University of Oxford and later earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge, where he spent the majority of his academic career. He focused his research on the origins and structure of the universe,notably black holes. He held the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics chair at Cambridge from 1979 to 2006, a position previously held by Isaac Newton.
At age 21, in 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Despite a grim prognosis initially estimating only a few years to live,he continued to research,teach,and publish for over five decades. According to the ALS Association, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is between two and five years.
Impact of ALS and Continued Research
Hawking’s physical abilities were progressively limited by ALS, eventually requiring him to use a speech-generating device to communicate.
Despite his physical challenges, Hawking made significant contributions to our understanding of black holes, including the theoretical prediction of Hawking radiation – the emission of particles from black holes. He co-authored several key papers on the subject, including “Black hole explosions?” published in nature on September 1, 1974, with his work building upon the earlier research of Roger Penrose and others.
He actively participated in the global scientific discourse until his death on March 14, 2018. His ability to continue his work despite his condition inspired many and demonstrated the power of the human spirit.
