Hayley Williams on Depression, Paramore’s “This Is Why,” and Collaborations
Hayley Williams, the powerhouse vocalist of Paramore, has opened up about her ongoing journey with depression, revealing how her latest album, This Is Why, became a pivotal point in addressing the issue in her music. The band’s sixth studio album, released in 2023, saw them embark on extensive touring, including a prominent role supporting Taylor Swift on her record-breaking Eras Tour.Williams recently lent her distinctive vocals to Turnstile’s track “seein’ Stars,” featured on the band’s new album never Enough. This collaboration highlights her willingness to explore diverse musical landscapes beyond Paramore’s established sound. Further showcasing her collaborative spirit, Williams also joined forces with Moses Sumney on his song “I Like It I Like It,” which was released in May.
Navigating Depression Through Song
In a candid interview with Rolling stone around the release of This Is Why, Williams shared her personal experiences with depression. She noted that the album marked the first time she felt cozy and empowered to confront and articulate these struggles within her songwriting.”People talk about anger and depression being so related because depression is like when you turn your anger inwards,” Williams explained. ”And I think that there’s bits of that anger mixed with bits of this real understanding of how frustrating it can feel to wake up with depression. Depression about your own choices, depression about the state of the world, depression about lost relationships or connections, or purpose. All that stuff is so heavy and you can’t control it.”
She elaborated on how this introspection shaped the emotional core of This Is Why. “So by this point, writing This Is Why – having learned about my own experiance and looking at it head on – I think that it’s captivating to think of that being a foundational point to the angst and the anxiousness and worry that This Is Why holds.”
The album itself has been lauded for its raw honesty and its exploration of complex emotional states, resonating deeply with fans who connect with Williams’ vulnerability. Paramore’s continued evolution as a band, coupled with Williams’ personal growth and willingness to share her journey, solidifies their position as one of contemporary rock’s most compelling and authentic voices.
