HBL: Breathe in Hamburg – HSV Handball License
HSV Hamburg Secures Licence for Upcoming Handball Season
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Handball Bundesliga club HSV Hamburg has been granted its license for the upcoming season, the club and the HBL announced Wednesday.
The handball Bundesliga (HBL) initially granted HSVH the license two weeks prior, contingent upon fulfilling a specific condition: providing additional proof of liquidity. This requirement has now been met, securing the team’s participation in the 2025/26 season. The team has already avoided relegation based on its performance this season.
Christian Hüneburg, HSVH Managing Director, stated, “we are in a different situation today than last year.We have been set up differently and knew early on that a condition was coming. as contractually agreed payments were not received, we needed some time to seriously implement a sustainable solution.” The deadline for meeting the condition was Monday at noon.
Financial Details Remain Confidential
Last season, Hamburg had to fight for its license before an arbitration tribunal after the licensing commission initially rejected their request due to a perceived liquidity gap. The club successfully appealed that decision.
Hüneburg noted that the sum required this year was “much smaller than last season.” Prior to the current season, entrepreneur Philipp Müller, now a member of the HSV Hamburg supervisory board, secured the license with a seven-figure sum.
Details regarding the specific amount required as a security deposit this time were not disclosed.
