Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

| Rotten Tomatoes Rating | 91% |
Dawn, the second installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, builds on Rise‘s acclaimed debut and delivers the true dystopian drama fans have been craving.Monkeys regain advanced intelligence and are hinted at deadly epidemics that decimated humans. Dawn explains that ten years later, the remaining humans are struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Simultaneously occurring, monkeys are showing the first signs of becoming the dominant society on Earth, establishing their own colony in the forests of San Francisco. But when the two tribes must interact for the first time in a decade so humans can repair a dam in the ape territory, the uneasy alliance is threatened by purists on both sides.
The War for the Planet of the Apes series has always been full of allegories, and Dawn deftly explores themes of racial division and human need that seem more relevant today than ever. It’s also a technical marvel, with the monkeys surprisingly lifelike, thanks in large part to the stellar motion-capture performances from the likes of Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell. When the tension finally reaches its climax, director Matt Reeves delivers an action-packed climax filled with mud and blood that puts most other blockbusters to shame.
