The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is restarting the Daniel K. Inouye Highway Extension Project and will host a public open house on May 20, 2026, to discuss the proposal and its environmental review process.
The project involves extending State Route (SR) 200, formerly known as Saddle Road, from its current western terminus at Māmalahoa Highway to the Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway.
To restart the project, HDOT must prepare updated Environmental Impact Statements (EISs). These documents must be compliant with the Hawaiʻi Environmental Policy Act (HEPA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
According to the department, the updated environmental analyses will build upon and update information that was previously published in the 2017 Draft EIS.
The upcoming open house is designed to allow participants to share their thoughts on the proposed project and learn about the project timeline and the requirements of the environmental review process.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 6 p.m. To 8 p.m. It will be held at the Waikōloa Elementary and Middle School Cafeteria, located at 68-1730 Hoʻoko Street in Waikōloa.
For those unable to attend in person, HDOT will share the presentation on naleo.tv and post it to the official project website following the open house.
Individuals requesting auxiliary aids, language interpretation, or special services, such as materials in alternate formats or a sign language interpreter, are asked to contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office prior to the meeting date. The office can be reached at 808-587-2160 or via email.
