Turkish club Adanaspor announced on Sunday that former Ivory Coast defender Sol Bamba will retire at the age of 39, after the team’s sporting director battled cancer.
Bamba was born on January 13, 1985 in France and started his football career at Paris Saint-Germain, later playing for Cardiff City, Leeds United and Leicester City. He also spent spells with Italian club Palermo, Scottish club Dunfermline Athletic and Hibernian and Turkish club Trabzonspor.
The Ivorian made 46 appearances for his country’s national team, scoring one goal, before retiring from the game in January 2023 and moving into coaching, where he worked as an assistant coach at Cardiff, then took up the post of sporting director at Adanspor.

Adanaspor said in a statement: “Our sports director Suleiman Bamba, who fell ill yesterday before the match against Manisa Football Club, was transferred to Manisa Selal Bayer University Hospital and unfortunately our condolences go out to his family and our community.”
Bamba was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2021, but recovered from the cancer after chemotherapy.
