Northern Ireland Health Minister Outlines Plan to Tackle Healthcare Crisis
Belfast, Northern Ireland – Health minister Robin Swann faced tough questions in the Northern ireland Assembly on Tuesday regarding the ongoing crisis in the region’s healthcare system. SDLP assembly member Colin McGrath pressed Swann on the need for a thorough, well-funded plan to address the critical issues plaguing the health service.
McGrath called for a “concrete,tangible,fully funded,time-bound and full Executive supported program” to enact the necessary changes and save the struggling health service.
Swann acknowledged the urgency of the situation, highlighting specific targets set for improvement. “In terms of definites, you will have noticed me say that I have set a target of an additional 46,000 outpatient assessments and 11,000 treatments by 2027,” he stated.
While acknowledging the desire for more ambitious goals, Swann emphasized the constraints of reality. “Of course I woudl like more, I think everybody would like more but this is the real world,” he said.
Later on tuesday, Swann confirmed he would be meeting with trade unions to discuss the ongoing concerns of healthcare workers.Addressing concerns about pay, Swann expressed his commitment to fair compensation for healthcare professionals. In response to a question from UUP MLA Alan Chambers,Swann stated his “intent” to accept the pay recommendations from relevant bodies for the 2025/26 financial year and implement those awards promptly.
