The Malaysian Health Ministry (MOH), through its Food Safety adn Quality Division (BKKM), is investigating claims that a woman died after consuming a health supplement recently popularized on social media. The investigation began on November 9, 2023, following reports circulating online.
Product Contains Prohibited Ingredient
Preliminary checks by BKKM revealed the supplement contains glutathione,an ingredient listed on the Negative List within the Drug registration Guidance Document (DRGD).This list identifies substances and products prohibited for use in Malaysia. The product was reportedly being sold on various e-commerce platforms and directly through social media channels.
According to BKKM, the product’s composition violates Section 13B(2)(d) of the Food Act 1983, wich prohibits the inclusion of ingredients not permitted under Malaysian food regulations.
Details of the initial Claim
The investigation was prompted by a post on the social media platform Threads, alleging a woman died after taking a RM20 supplement marketed for skin-lightening. BKKM is currently attempting to trace the origin of this claim to verify its accuracy.
As of November 9, 2023, BKKM stated that no posts from close family members or friends have surfaced on social media confirming the reported death linked to the supplement. This creates a contradiction with the initial claim and is a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
BKKM is conducting a comprehensive investigation, examining product labeling, ingredients, manufacturing facilities, importers, and distribution networks within Malaysia. The division stated it will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
