AMA Prepares Healthcare Providers for AI Implementation

The american Medical Association (AMA) is actively preparing to assist healthcare providers in the safe and effective implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with a focus on 2026.
AI is Already Impacting Healthcare
According to AMA CEO and Executive Vice President John Whyte, MD, AI is not a future possibility but a current reality in the practice of medicine as of December 2023. Dr. Whyte made these remarks at an event in Chicago, as reported in a December 19 news release.
The AMA has found that over two-thirds of physicians currently recognize at least some benefit to using AI in their practice, an increase from 63% in 2023.
AMA’s 2026 Focus Areas
the AMA Center for Digital Health and AI has outlined four key areas of focus for 2026:
- Policy and regulatory leadership
- Clinical workflow integration
- Education and training
- Collaboration
Dr. Whyte highlighted the critical question of when to regulate AI,stating,”The essential question is: Do you regulate before you try,or do you try and then you regulate?” according to an article in Becker’s Hospital Review. He cautioned that excessive regulation could hinder progress, while insufficient oversight could possibly endanger patients.
