A recent study in Health Affairs⁣ Scholar examined crowdfunding campaigns to gauge the extent of medical financial hardship in⁢ the‍ United States. The​ research, conducted between May and July 2024, analyzed GoFundMe campaigns tagged “medical” to understand what ⁢Americans are struggling to afford.

The study identified medical bills as the most frequent target for fundraising, followed by living expenses and lost income. These needs were consistent across various medical conditions, including cancer (37% of campaigns), surgery or transplant (28%), and⁣ vehicle accidents (17%).Musculoskeletal issues, heart conditions, rare diseases, natal care, ⁣kidney disease, mental health, gun violence, diabetes and COVID-19 were also represented.
