Hospitals Face Challenges with Healthcare Data Storage and Management

Updated June 7, 2025

Hospitals and health systems are struggling to manage and utilize the rapidly increasing volume of healthcare data.Traditional storage systems, ⁢designed for smaller, ⁢structured ‍datasets,⁤ are under pressure from the influx of data generated by electronic health records, wearable sensors, remote monitoring devices, and medical ‍imaging.

Chris Platt, chief technologist for healthcare life sciences ⁣at HPE, ⁢said ⁣the challenge lies not only in the scale of the data but also in how ‍providers can⁢ effectively use it. He noted that healthcare organizations face pressure to manage, store, protect, and curate this data in meaningful ways amid a “data explosion.”

Platt estimates that⁤ a midsized hospital ⁣network can generate over 55 petabytes of data annually. While much of this data ⁤remains unused after its initial⁢ purpose,it is becoming increasingly valuable for ⁤long-term initiatives like AI model training and real-time clinical⁤ decision ⁣support. The key, Platt said, is⁣ making healthcare data usable quickly, securely, and at‍ scale.

We’re in a data explosion right now. Healthcare organizations are‍ under pressure to manage, store, ⁢protect and curate ⁣all of that⁣ data in meaningful ways.

What’s next

As healthcare data continues to grow, hospitals must adopt modern data management strategies to ⁤leverage its full potential for improved patient care⁣ and operational efficiency. Embracing new technologies for healthcare data storage and analysis will be essential for future success.
