KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A new initiative aims to eliminate preventable deaths from dengue fever in Malaysia through a multi-pronged approach. The “End Dengue Deaths (ENDD)” campaign, a joint effort by Dengue Prevention Advocacy Malaysia (DPAM) and Immunise4Life (IFL), urges Malaysians to take four key actions: eradicate mosquito breeding sites, avoid mosquito bites, get vaccinated, and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.
Dr. Ismuni Bohari, Deputy Director-General of Health, officially launched the campaign on behalf of Deputy Health Minister Dato’ Lukanisman Bin Awang Sauni.
Dengue remains a major public health challenge in Malaysia. While cases saw a slight decrease in 2024,deaths rose by 17% compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH). In 2023, dengue ranked third among communicable diseases, following COVID-19 and Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD).
The MoH has implemented various strategies, including the iDengue portal for tracking cases and mosquito control operations. releasing Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes has also shown success, reducing dengue cases by 50–80% in some areas.
Professor Datuk dr. Zulkifli Ismail, chairman of DPAM and IFL,emphasized the need for collective action. He stated that Malaysia can achieve the world Health Organization’s goal of zero preventable dengue deaths by 2030 with commitment from civil society and the private sector.
