Pantai KL Achieves Milestone in Congenital Heart Disease Treatment
Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) has achieved a meaningful advancement in cardiovascular care, successfully performing a transcatheter device occlusion of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in an adult patient. This marks the first such procedure in the hospital’s Interventional Cardiology Laboratory (ICL) for a patient with congenital heart disease.
the patient was initially considered for open-heart surgery to address both the PDA and a ventricular septal defect (VSD). Though, PHKL’s cardiac team, employing a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach, determined that the VSD was minor. A transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) confirmed that the VSD did not require immediate surgical intervention, paving the way for a less invasive, catheter-based solution for the PDA.
Dr. Siti Laura, Consultant Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon at PHKL, emphasized the benefits of the chosen approach.”By opting for a minimally invasive PDA device occlusion, we were able to offer the patient a faster recovery, smaller incision, and substantially reduced scarring,” she said.
This accomplished procedure underscores PHKL’s growing capabilities in adult congenital heart disease care. The hospital’s commitment to innovative, minimally invasive solutions addresses the needs of adults with structural heart conditions, a demographic frequently enough underserved in congenital cardiac care.
Our ability to perform such procedures reflects the hospital’s continuous investment in advanced cardiac technology and our commitment to improving outcomes for patients with congenital heart disease,” Dr Siti Laura added.
Dr. Laura also noted that the patient’s condition, especially the VSD,will be closely monitored to ensure optimal long-term care. The hospital’s investment in advanced cardiac technology supports improved patient outcomes in Malaysia.
What’s next
PHKL aims to solidify its position as a leading referral center and center of excellence for adult congenital heart disease management in Malaysia, continuing to expand its services and expertise in this specialized field.
