Malaysia Faces Critical nurse Shortage; MOH Seeks Solutions

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) ⁢is confronting a notable shortage of nurses nationwide. Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed the issue,stating that the ministry is actively pursuing several strategies to mitigate the crisis. These strategies⁣ include boosting the number ⁣of nursing trainees.

According to Dr. Dzulkefly, ⁢the⁤ nurse shortage is now a more pressing concern for⁤ the MOH than digitalization efforts. He addressed the issue following a handover ceremony for the Pasir Gudang Hospital project.

Between 2020 and 2024, 6,919 health workers under the MOH resigned, with 2,141 of those being nurses. Projections indicate that the shortage could reach almost 60% ⁣by 2030 if unaddressed. The ministry is exploring collaborations between the public and private sectors to bolster the number of nursing personnel available to meet⁢ Malaysia’s healthcare demands and address the critical ‍role nurses play.

The MOH is also considering interim measures, such as hiring nurses from abroad, to alleviate the immediate strain. Though, Dr. Dzulkefly emphasized the importance of improving the morale‌ and​ work ethic of ⁤local nurses, alongside addressing salary and reward issues.
