KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A new⁤ initiative aims⁤ to eliminate ⁣preventable deaths from dengue fever in Malaysia through ‍a multi-pronged approach. The “End Dengue Deaths (ENDD)” campaign, a joint effort by Dengue ⁤Prevention Advocacy Malaysia (DPAM) and Immunise4Life (IFL), urges Malaysians to take four ⁤key actions: eradicate mosquito⁢ breeding sites, avoid mosquito bites, get vaccinated, and seek ⁣prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.

Dr. Ismuni Bohari, Deputy⁤ Director-General of Health, officially launched the campaign on behalf ⁤of Deputy Health Minister Dato’ Lukanisman⁤ Bin Awang Sauni.

Dengue remains⁤ a major public health challenge in Malaysia. ⁢While cases saw a⁢ slight decrease in 2024,deaths⁢ rose by 17% compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH). In 2023, dengue ranked⁢ third among communicable diseases, following ⁤COVID-19 and Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD).

The MoH ⁢has implemented various strategies, including the iDengue ⁢portal for tracking ‍cases and mosquito ⁤control operations. releasing Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes ⁣has also shown success, reducing dengue cases by 50–80% in some areas.

Professor Datuk dr. Zulkifli Ismail, chairman of DPAM ⁢and IFL,emphasized the need for collective ⁤action. He stated that Malaysia can achieve the world Health Organization’s goal of zero preventable dengue deaths by 2030 with commitment from civil society and the private sector.
