What dietary choices promote healthy aging, allowing individuals to live life to the fullest, rather than merely prolonging existence?
A collaborative study by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Montreal suggests that consuming a diet rich in healthy plant-based foods and incorporating healthy animal-based foods may be key.
For the purposes of this study, healthy aging was defined as reaching the age of 70 without major chronic diseases, maintaining good cognitive function, and preserving physical and mental well-being.
The findings, published in the journal Nature Medicine, represent one of the initial investigations into the connection between diet in middle age and subsequent healthy aging.
Researchers tracked the diets and health outcomes of more than 105,000 participants (women aged 39-69 and men) enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants completed dietary questionnaires, and researchers assessed adherence to eight established healthy diet patterns:
- Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)
- Alternative Mediterranean Diet Index (AMED)
- Dietary approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)
- Healthy Plant-Based Diet Index (HPDI)
- planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI)
- Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Pattern (EDIP)
- empirical High Insulinemic Diet Pattern (EDIH)
these dietary patterns generally emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts, and legumes, along wiht healthy animal-based foods like fish and low-fat dairy products.
The study also considered the consumption of ultra-processed foods, noting the presence of artificial colors, preservatives, additives, sodium, and saturated fats.
Of the participants, 9,771 (9.3%) achieved healthy aging, maintaining good health and function at age 70. Adherence to one of the eight healthy diet patterns was associated with positive outcomes in overall healthy aging, cognitive function, physical health, and mental well-being.
The Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), designed to prevent chronic diseases, proved most effective. Participants in the top 20% for AHEI scores were 86% more likely to be healthy at age 70 compared to those in the bottom 20%. They were also 2.2 times more likely to reach age 75 in good health. The AHEI diet prioritizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, soy, and healthy fats, while limiting red meat, processed meats, sugar, sodium, and refined grains.
The planetary Health Diet index (PHDI) was the second most effective. this diet emphasizes plant-based foods to minimize environmental impact and promote human health. Fruits and vegetables comprise more than half of the diet, with the remainder consisting of whole grains, nuts, legumes, unsaturated vegetable oils, moderate amounts of meat and dairy, and limited starchy vegetables and additives.
The study also highlighted the negative effects of ultra-processed foods. Higher consumption of processed meats, sugary drinks, and artificially sweetened beverages was linked to a lower likelihood of healthy aging.
Maintaining a diet rich in plant-based foods and incorporating healthy animal-based foods can contribute to healthy aging,
according to a researcher involved in the study.
While diet is not the sole determinant of healthy aging, researchers emphasize that dietary improvements can considerably contribute to overall well-being.

healthy plant-based foods: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are key components.
Incorporating healthy animal-based foods: Moderate intake of fish and low-fat dairy products is beneficial.
Which Dietary Patterns are most Beneficial for Healthy Aging?
The study looked at participants’ adherence to eight established healthy diet patterns. The most effective dietary pattern identified was the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)
The AHEI is associated wiht:
An 86% greater likelihood of being healthy at age 70 (compared to those with lower scores).
Being 2.2 times more likely to reach age 75 in good health.
What Foods Should Be Limited for Healthy Aging?
The study also highlighted the negative impact of certain foods on healthy aging, higher consumption of:
Processed meats
Sugary drinks
Artificially sweetened beverages
Key Components of a Healthy Diet for Longevity
The researchers tracked the diets and health outcomes of more than 105,000 participants, who complete dietary questionnaires and assessed adherence to eight established healthy diet patterns. These patterns emphasize:
Fruits
Vegetables
Whole grains

* Legumes
Comparison of Key Dietary Patterns
| Dietary Pattern | Key Characteristics |
| :———————————- | :—————————————————————————————————————– |
| Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) | Prioritizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, soy, and healthy fats; limits red and processed meats, sugar, sodium. |
| Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) | Emphasizes plant-based foods; more than half of the diet consists of fruits and vegetables. |
