The Revelation: Bacteria in Arterial Plaques
For years, scientists have suspected a link between bacterial involvement and coronary artery disease, but definitive proof remained elusive. Researchers led by Dr. Petri Karhunen at Tampere and Oulu Universities in Finland, along with colleagues from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and the University of Oxford, have now provided compelling evidence.
The team discovered genetic material – DNA – from several oral bacteria within atherosclerotic plaques.This finding was validated by developing an antibody specifically targeting these bacteria, which revealed the presence of biofilm structures within arterial tissue. Crucially, bacteria released from these biofilms were observed in patients experiencing myocardial infarction.
How Bacteria Contribute to Heart Disease
The study indicates that the body’s immune system responds to the presence of these bacteria, triggering inflammation. This inflammation weakens the cholesterol-laden plaques, making them prone to rupture. Plaque rupture is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.
This mechanism differs from the previously dominant theory, which focused on the immune response to oxidized LDL as the primary driver of inflammation. The new research suggests that bacterial presence *initiates* the inflammatory cascade, rather than being a secondary consequence of lipid oxidation.
Study Methodology and Sample Sources
Researchers analyzed tissue samples obtained from two groups: individuals who died suddenly from cardiac arrest and patients undergoing surgery to clear carotid and peripheral arteries due to atherosclerosis. This dual approach provided a thorough view of the disease process, from acute events to chronic conditions.
The research was part of a larger, EU-funded cardiovascular research project involving 11 countries. Funding was also provided by the Finnish Foundation for Cardiovascular Research and the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.
Implications for Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention
The findings open up exciting possibilities for new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.Developing methods to detect bacterial presence in arterial plaques coudl allow for earlier intervention. Furthermore, the research suggests that vaccination against key oral bacteria could potentially prevent the development of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction.
“These observations pave the way for the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for myocardial infarction,” explains Dr. Karhunen. “Furthermore, they advance the possibility of preventing coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction by vaccination.”
